21 Then 1 I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had ceased to exist, 2 and the sea existed no more. 2 And I saw the holy city – the new Jerusalem – descending out of heaven from God, made ready like a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Look! The residence 3 of God is among human beings. 4 He 5 will live among them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them. 6 4 He 7 will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more – or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.” 8
5 And the one seated on the throne said: “Look! I am making all things new!” Then 9 he said to me, “Write it down, 10 because these words are reliable 11 and true.” 6 He also said to me, “It is done! 12 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the one who is thirsty I will give water 13 free of charge 14 from the spring of the water of life. 7 The one who conquers 15 will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8 But to the cowards, unbelievers, detestable persons, murderers, the sexually immoral, and those who practice magic spells, 16 idol worshipers, 17 and all those who lie, their place 18 will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. 19 That 20 is the second death.”
9 Then 21 one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven final plagues came and spoke to me, 22 saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb!” 10 So 23 he took me away in the Spirit 24 to a huge, majestic mountain 25 and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. 11 The city possesses 26 the glory of God; its brilliance is like a precious jewel, like a stone of crystal-clear jasper. 27 12 It has 28 a massive, high wall 29 with twelve gates, 30 with twelve angels at the gates, and the names of the twelve tribes of the nation of Israel 31 are written on the gates. 32 13 There are 33 three gates on the east side, three gates on the north side, three gates on the south side and three gates on the west side. 34 14 The 35 wall of the city has twelve foundations, and on them are the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 The angel 36 who spoke to me had a golden measuring rod with which to measure the city and its foundation stones and wall. 16 Now 37 the city is laid out as a square, 38 its length and width the same. He 39 measured the city with the measuring rod 40 at fourteen hundred miles 41 (its length and width and height are equal). 17 He also measured its wall, one hundred forty-four cubits 42 according to human measurement, which is also the angel’s. 43 18 The city’s 44 wall is made 45 of jasper and the city is pure gold, like transparent glass. 46 19 The foundations of the city’s wall are decorated 47 with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation is jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, 48 the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, 49 the sixth carnelian, 50 the seventh chrysolite, 51 the eighth beryl, 52 the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, 53 the eleventh jacinth, 54 and the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates are twelve pearls – each one of the gates is made from just one pearl! The 55 main street 56 of the city is pure gold, like transparent glass.
22 Now 57 I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God – the All-Powerful 58 – and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God lights it up, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations 59 will walk by its light and the kings of the earth will bring their grandeur 60 into it. 25 Its gates will never be closed during the day 61 (and 62 there will be no night there). 63 26 They will bring the grandeur and the wealth 64 of the nations 65 into it, 27 but 66 nothing ritually unclean 67 will ever enter into it, nor anyone who does what is detestable 68 or practices falsehood, 69 but only those whose names 70 are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
22 Then 1 the angel 2 showed me the river of the water of life – water as clear as crystal – pouring out 3 from the throne of God and of the Lamb, 2 flowing down the middle of the city’s 4 main street. 5 On each side 6 of the river is the tree of life producing twelve kinds 7 of fruit, yielding its fruit every month of the year. 8 Its leaves are for the healing of the nations. 3 And there will no longer be any curse, 9 and the throne of God and the Lamb will be in the city. 10 His 11 servants 12 will worship 13 him, 4 and they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 Night will be no more, and they will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, because the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.
6 Then 14 the angel 15 said to me, “These words are reliable 16 and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants 17 what must happen soon.”
7 (Look! I am coming soon!
Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy expressed in this book.) 18
8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things, 19 and when I heard and saw them, 20 I threw myself down 21 to worship at the feet of the angel who was showing them to me. 9 But 22 he said to me, “Do not do this! 23 I am a fellow servant 24 with you and with your brothers the prophets, and with those who obey 25 the words of this book. Worship God!” 10 Then 26 he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy contained in this book, because the time is near. 11 The evildoer must continue to do evil, 27 and the one who is morally filthy 28 must continue to be filthy. The 29 one who is righteous must continue to act righteously, and the one who is holy must continue to be holy.”
12 (Look! I am coming soon,
and my reward is with me to pay 30 each one according to what he has done!
13 I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the first and the last,
the beginning and the end!) 31
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes so they can have access 32 to the tree of life and can enter into the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers 33 and the sexually immoral, and the murderers, and the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood! 34
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!” 35 17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say: “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wants it take the water of life free of charge.
18 I testify to the one who hears the words of the prophecy contained in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described 36 in this book. 19 And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life 37 and in the holy city that are described in this book.
20 The one who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. 38
1 In the beginning 1 God 2 created 3 the heavens and the earth. 4
2 Now 5 the earth 6 was without shape and empty, 7 and darkness 8 was over the surface of the watery deep, 9 but the Spirit of God 10 was moving 11 over the surface 12 of the water. 13 3 God said, 14 “Let there be 15 light.” 16 And there was light! 4 God saw 17 that the light was good, 18 so God separated 19 the light from the darkness. 5 God called 20 the light “day” and the darkness 21 “night.” There was evening, and there was morning, marking the first day. 22
6 God said, “Let there be an expanse 23 in the midst of the waters and let it separate water 24 from water. 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. 25 It was so. 26 8 God called the expanse “sky.” 27 There was evening, and there was morning, a second day.
9 God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place 28 and let dry ground appear.” 29 It was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land” 30 and the gathered waters he called “seas.” God saw that it was good.
11 God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: 31 plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, 32 and 33 trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.” It was so. 12 The land produced vegetation – plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening, and there was morning, a third day.
14 God said, “Let there be lights 34 in the expanse 35 of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them be signs 36 to indicate seasons and days and years, 15 and let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” It was so. 16 God made two great lights 37 – the greater light to rule over the day and the lesser light to rule over the night. He made the stars also. 38 17 God placed the lights 39 in the expanse of the sky to shine on the earth, 18 to preside over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. 40 God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening, and there was morning, a fourth day.
20 God said, “Let the water swarm with swarms 41 of living creatures and let birds fly 42 above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” 21 God created the great sea creatures 43 and every living and moving thing with which the water swarmed, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them 44 and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” 45 23 There was evening, and there was morning, a fifth day.
24 God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: cattle, creeping things, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” 46 It was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the cattle according to their kinds, and all the creatures that creep along the ground according to their kinds. God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, “Let us make 47
humankind 48 in our image, after our likeness, 49 so they may rule 50 over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the cattle, and over all the earth, 51 and over all the creatures that move 52 on the earth.”
27 God created humankind 53 in his own image,
in the image of God he created them, 54
male and female he created them. 55
28 God blessed 56 them and said 57 to them, “Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the earth and subdue it! 58 Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that moves on the ground.” 59 29 Then God said, “I now 60 give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the entire earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 61 30 And to all the animals of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to all the creatures that move on the ground – everything that has the breath of life in it – I give 62 every green plant for food.” It was so.
31 God saw all that he had made – and it was very good! 63 There was evening, and there was morning, the sixth day.
