54 For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song 1 by David. It was written when the Ziphites came and informed Saul: “David is hiding with us.” 2
O God, deliver me by your name! 3
Vindicate me 4 by your power!
2 O God, listen to my prayer!
Pay attention to what I say! 5
3 For foreigners 6 attack me; 7
ruthless men, who do not respect God, seek my life. 8 (Selah)
4 Look, God is my deliverer! 9
The Lord is among those who support me. 10
5 May those who wait to ambush me 11 be repaid for their evil! 12
As a demonstration of your faithfulness, 13 destroy them!
6 With a freewill offering I will sacrifice 14 to you!
I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good!
7 Surely 15 he rescues me from all trouble, 16
and I triumph over my enemies. 17
55 For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song 1 by David.
Listen, O God, to my prayer!
Do not ignore 2 my appeal for mercy!
2 Pay attention to me and answer me!
I am so upset 3 and distressed, 4 I am beside myself, 5
3 because of what the enemy says, 6
and because of how the wicked 7 pressure me, 8
for they hurl trouble 9 down upon me 10
and angrily attack me.
4 My heart beats violently 11 within me;
the horrors of death overcome me. 12
5 Fear and panic overpower me; 13
terror overwhelms 14 me.
6 I say, 15 “I wish I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and settle in a safe place!
7 Look, I will escape to a distant place;
I will stay in the wilderness. (Selah)
8 I will hurry off to a place that is safe
from the strong wind 16 and the gale.”
9 Confuse them, 17 O Lord!
Frustrate their plans! 18
For I see violence and conflict in the city.
10 Day and night they walk around on its walls, 19
while wickedness and destruction 20 are within it.
11 Disaster is within it;
violence 21 and deceit do not depart from its public square.
12 Indeed, 22 it is not an enemy who insults me,
or else I could bear it;
it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me, 23
or else I could hide from him.
13 But it is you, 24 a man like me, 25
my close friend in whom I confided. 26
14 We would share personal thoughts with each other; 27
in God’s temple we would walk together among the crowd.
15 May death destroy them! 28
May they go down alive into Sheol! 29
For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst.
16 As for me, I will call out to God,
and the Lord will deliver me.
17 During the evening, morning, and noontime
I will lament and moan, 30
and he will hear 31 me. 32
18 He will rescue 33 me and protect me from those who attack me, 34
even though 35 they greatly outnumber me. 36
19 God, the one who has reigned as king from long ago,
will hear and humiliate them. 37 (Selah)
They refuse to change,
and do not fear God. 38
20 He 39 attacks 40 his friends; 41
he breaks his solemn promises to them. 42
21 His words are as smooth as butter, 43
but he harbors animosity in his heart. 44
His words seem softer than oil,
but they are really like sharp swords. 45
22 Throw your burden 46 upon the Lord,
and he will sustain you. 47
He will never allow the godly to be upended. 48
23 But you, O God, will bring them 49 down to the deep Pit. 50
Violent and deceitful people 51 will not live even half a normal lifespan. 52
But as for me, I trust in you.
56 For the music director; according to the yonath-elem-rechovim style; 1 a prayer 2 of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath. 3
Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! 4
All day long hostile enemies 5 are tormenting me. 6
2 Those who anticipate my defeat 7 attack me all day long.
Indeed, 8 many are fighting against me, O Exalted One. 9
3 When 10 I am afraid,
I trust in you.
4 In God – I boast in his promise 11 –
in God I trust, I am not afraid.
What can mere men 12 do to me? 13
5 All day long they cause me trouble; 14
they make a habit of plotting my demise. 15
6 They stalk 16 and lurk; 17
they watch my every step, 18
as 19 they prepare to take my life. 20
7 Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape! 21
In your anger 22 bring down the nations, 23 O God!
8 You keep track of my misery. 24
Put my tears in your leather container! 25
Are they not recorded in your scroll? 26
9 My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help; 27
I know that God is on my side. 28
10 In God – I boast in his promise 29 –
in the Lord – I boast in his promise 30 –
11 in God I trust, I am not afraid.
What can mere men 31 do to me? 32
12 I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God; 33
I will give you the thank-offerings you deserve, 34
13 when you deliver 35 my life from death.
You keep my feet from stumbling, 36
so that I might serve 37 God as I enjoy life. 38
