12 For the music director; according to the sheminith style; 1 a psalm of David.
For the godly 2 have disappeared; 3
people of integrity 4 have vanished. 5
2 People lie to one another; 6
they flatter and deceive. 7
3 May the Lord cut off 8 all flattering lips,
and the tongue that boasts! 9
4 They say, 10 “We speak persuasively; 11
we know how to flatter and boast. 12
Who is our master?” 13
5 “Because of the violence done to the oppressed, 14
because of the painful cries 15 of the needy,
I will spring into action,” 16 says the Lord.
“I will provide the safety they so desperately desire.” 17
6 The Lord’s words are absolutely reliable. 18
They are as untainted as silver purified in a furnace on the ground,
where it is thoroughly refined. 19
7 You, Lord, will protect them; 20
you will continually shelter each one from these evil people, 21
8 for the wicked seem to be everywhere, 22
when people promote evil. 23
13 For the music director; a psalm of David.
How long, Lord, will you continue to ignore me? 1
How long will you pay no attention to me? 2
2 How long must I worry, 3
and suffer in broad daylight? 4
How long will my enemy gloat over me? 5
3 Look at me! 6 Answer me, O Lord my God!
Revive me, 7 or else I will die! 8
4 Then 9 my enemy will say, “I have defeated him!”
Then 10 my foes will rejoice because I am upended.
5 But I 11 trust in your faithfulness.
May I rejoice because of your deliverance! 12
6 I will sing praises 13 to the Lord
when he vindicates me. 14
14 For the music director; by David.
Fools say to themselves, 1 “There is no God.” 2
They sin and commit evil deeds; 3
none of them does what is right. 4
2 The Lord looks down from heaven 5 at the human race, 6
to see if there is anyone who is wise 7 and seeks God. 8
3 Everyone rejects God; 9
they are all morally corrupt. 10
None of them does what is right, 11
not even one!
4 All those who behave wickedly 12 do not understand – 13
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to the Lord.
5 They are absolutely terrified, 14
for God defends the godly. 15
6 You want to humiliate the oppressed, 16
even though 17 the Lord is their 18 shelter.
7 I wish the deliverance 19 of Israel would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the well-being of his people, 20
may Jacob rejoice, 21
may Israel be happy! 22
