51 For the music director; a psalm of David, written when Nathan the prophet confronted him after David’s affair with Bathsheba. 1
Have mercy on me, O God, because of 2 your loyal love!
Because of 3 your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts! 4
2 Wash away my wrongdoing! 5
Cleanse me of my sin! 6
3 For I am aware of 7 my rebellious acts;
I am forever conscious of my sin. 8
4 Against you – you above all 9 – I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So 10 you are just when you confront me; 11
you are right when you condemn me. 12
5 Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother conceived me. 13
6 Look, 14 you desire 15 integrity in the inner man; 16
you want me to possess wisdom. 17
7 Sprinkle me 18 with water 19 and I will be pure; 20
wash me 21 and I will be whiter than snow. 22
8 Grant me the ultimate joy of being forgiven! 23
May the bones 24 you crushed rejoice! 25
9 Hide your face 26 from my sins!
Wipe away 27 all my guilt!
10 Create for me a pure heart, O God! 28
Renew a resolute spirit within me! 29
11 Do not reject me! 30
Do not take your Holy Spirit 31 away from me! 32
12 Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance!
Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey! 33
13 Then I will teach 34 rebels your merciful ways, 35
and sinners will turn 36 to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of murder, 37 O God, the God who delivers me!
Then my tongue will shout for joy because of your deliverance. 38
15 O Lord, give me the words! 39
Then my mouth will praise you. 40
16 Certainly 41 you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it; 42
you do not desire a burnt sacrifice. 43
17 The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit 44 –
O God, a humble and repentant heart 45 you will not reject. 46
18 Because you favor Zion, do what is good for her! 47
Fortify 48 the walls of Jerusalem! 49
19 Then you will accept 50 the proper sacrifices, burnt sacrifices and whole offerings;
then bulls will be sacrificed 51 on your altar. 52
52 For the music director; a well-written song 1 by David. It was written when Doeg the Edomite went and informed Saul: “David has arrived at the home of Ahimelech.” 2
Why do you boast about your evil plans, 3 O powerful man?
God’s loyal love protects me all day long! 4
2 Your tongue carries out your destructive plans; 5
it is as effective as a sharp razor, O deceiver. 6
3 You love evil more than good,
lies more than speaking the truth. 7 (Selah)
4 You love to use all the words that destroy, 8
and the tongue that deceives.
5 Yet 9 God will make you a permanent heap of ruins. 10
He will scoop you up 11 and remove you from your home; 12
he will uproot you from the land of the living. (Selah)
6 When the godly see this, they will be filled with awe,
and will mock the evildoer, saying: 13
7 “Look, here is the man who would not make 14 God his protector!
He trusted in his great wealth
and was confident about his plans to destroy others.” 15
8 But I 16 am like a flourishing 17 olive tree in the house of God;
I continually 18 trust in God’s loyal love.
9 I will continually 19 thank you when 20 you execute judgment; 21
I will rely 22 on you, 23 for your loyal followers know you are good. 24
