9 I saw the sovereign One 1 standing by the altar 2 and he said, “Strike the tops of the support pillars, 3 so the thresholds shake!
Knock them down on the heads of all the people, 4
and I will kill the survivors 5 with the sword.
No one will be able to run away; 6
no one will be able to escape. 7
2 Even if they could dig down into the netherworld, 8
my hand would pull them up from there.
Even if they could climb up to heaven,
I would drag them down from there.
3 Even if they were to hide on the top of Mount Carmel,
I would hunt them down and take them from there.
Even if they tried to hide from me 9 at the bottom of the sea,
from there 10 I would command the Sea Serpent 11 to bite them.
4 Even when their enemies drive them into captivity, 12
from there 13 I will command the sword to kill them.
I will not let them out of my sight;
they will experience disaster, not prosperity.” 14
5 The sovereign Lord who commands armies will do this. 15
He touches the earth and it dissolves; 16
all who live on it mourn.
The whole earth 17 rises like the River Nile, 18
and then grows calm 19 like the Nile in Egypt. 20
6 He builds the upper rooms of his palace 21 in heaven
and sets its foundation supports 22 on the earth. 23
He summons the water of the sea
and pours it out on the earth’s surface.
The Lord is his name.
7 “You Israelites are just like the Ethiopians in my sight,” 24 says the Lord.
“Certainly I brought Israel up from the land of Egypt,
but I also brought the Philistines from Caphtor 25 and the Arameans from Kir. 26
8 Look, the sovereign Lord is watching 27 the sinful nation, 28
and I will destroy it from the face of the earth.
But I will not completely destroy the family 29 of Jacob,” says the Lord.
9 “For look, I am giving a command
and I will shake the family of Israel together with all the nations.
It will resemble a sieve being shaken,
when not even a pebble falls to the ground. 30
10 All the sinners among my people will die by the sword –
the ones who say, ‘Disaster will not come near, it will not confront us.’
11 “In that day I will rebuild the collapsing hut 31 of David.
I will seal its 32 gaps,
repair its 33 ruins,
and restore it to what it was like in days gone by. 34
12 As a result they 35 will conquer those left in Edom 36
and all the nations subject to my rule.” 37
The Lord, who is about to do this, is speaking!
13 “Be sure of this, 38 the time is 39 coming,” says the Lord,
“when the plowman will catch up to the reaper 40
and the one who stomps the grapes 41 will overtake 42 the planter. 43
Juice will run down the slopes, 44
it will flow down all the hillsides. 45
14 I will bring back my people, Israel; 46
they will rebuild the cities lying in rubble 47 and settle down. 48
They will plant vineyards and drink the wine they produce; 49
they will grow orchards 50 and eat the fruit they produce. 51
15 I will plant them on their land
and they will never again be uprooted from the 52 land I have given them,”
says the Lord your God.
1 The vision 1 that Obadiah 2 saw. 3
The Lord God 4 says this concerning 5 Edom: 6
We have heard a report from the Lord.
An envoy was sent among the nations, saying, 7
“Arise! Let us make war against Edom!” 8
2 The Lord says, 9 “Look! I will 10 make you a weak nation; 11
you will be greatly despised!
3 Your presumptuous heart 12 has deceived you –
you who reside in the safety of the rocky cliffs, 13
whose home is high in the mountains. 14
You think to yourself, 15
‘No one can 16 bring me down to the ground!’ 17
4 Even if you were to soar high like an eagle, 18
even if you 19 were to make your nest among the stars,
I can bring you down even from there!” says the Lord.
5 “If thieves came to rob you 20 during the night, 21
they would steal only as much as they wanted! 22
If grape pickers came to harvest your vineyards, 23
they would leave some behind for the poor! 24
But you will be totally destroyed! 25
6 How the people of Esau 26 will be thoroughly plundered! 27
Their 28 hidden valuables will be ransacked! 29
7 All your allies 30 will force 31 you from your homeland! 32
Your treaty partners 33 will deceive you and overpower you.
Your trusted friends 34 will set an ambush 35 for 36 you
that will take you by surprise! 37
8 At that time,” 38 the Lord says,
“I will destroy the wise sages of Edom! 39
the advisers 40 from Esau’s mountain! 41
9 Your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, 42
so that 43 everyone 44 will be destroyed 45 from Esau’s mountain!
10 “Because 46 you violently slaughtered 47 your relatives, 48 the people of Jacob, 49
shame will cover you, and you will be destroyed 50 forever.
11 You stood aloof 51 while strangers took his army 52 captive,
and foreigners advanced to his gates. 53
When they cast lots 54 over Jerusalem, 55
you behaved as though you were in league 56 with them.
12 You should not 57 have gloated 58 when your relatives 59 suffered calamity. 60
You should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah when they were destroyed. 61
You should not have boasted 62 when they suffered adversity. 63
13 You should not have entered the city 64 of my people when they experienced distress. 65
You should not have joined 66 in gloating over their misfortune when they suffered distress. 67
You should not have looted 68 their wealth when they endured distress. 69
14 You should not have stood at the fork in the road 70 to slaughter 71 those trying to escape. 72
You should not have captured their refugees when they suffered adversity. 73
15 “For the day of the Lord 74 is approaching 75 for all the nations! 76
Just as you have done, so it will be done to you.
You will get exactly what your deeds deserve. 77
16 For just as you 78 have drunk 79 on my holy mountain,
so all the nations will drink continually. 80
They will drink, and they will gulp down;
they will be as though they had never been.
17 But on Mount Zion there will be a remnant of those who escape, 81
and it will be a holy place once again.
The descendants 82 of Jacob will conquer 83
those who had conquered them. 84
18 The descendants of Jacob will be a fire,
and the descendants of Joseph a flame.
The descendants of Esau will be like stubble.
They will burn them up and devour them.
There will not be a single survivor 85 of the descendants of Esau!”
Indeed, the Lord has spoken it.
19 The people of the Negev 86 will take possession 87 of Esau’s mountain,
and the people of the Shephelah 88 will take
possession 89 of the land of 90 the Philistines.
They will also take possession of the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,
and the people of Benjamin will take possession 91 of Gilead. 92
20 The exiles of this fortress 93 of the people of Israel
will take possession 94 of what belongs to
the people of Canaan, as far as Zarephath, 95
and the exiles of Jerusalem 96 who are in Sepharad 97
will take possession of the towns of the Negev.
21 Those who have been delivered 98 will go up on Mount Zion
in order to rule over 99 Esau’s mountain.
Then the Lord will reign as King! 100
1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, 1 which God gave him to show his servants 2 what must happen very soon. 3 He made it clear 4 by sending his angel to his servant 5 John, 2 who then 6 testified to everything that he saw concerning the word of God and the testimony about 7 Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed is the one who reads the words of this 8 prophecy aloud, 9 and blessed are 10 those who hear and obey 11 the things written in it, because the time is near! 12
4 From John, 13 to the seven churches that are in the province of Asia: 14 Grace and peace to you 15 from “he who is,” 16 and who was, and who is still to come, 17 and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ – the faithful 18 witness, 19 the firstborn from among the dead, the ruler over the kings of the earth. To the one who loves us and has set us free 20 from our sins at the cost of 21 his own blood 6 and has appointed 22 us as a kingdom, 23 as priests 24 serving his God and Father – to him be the glory and the power for ever and ever! 25 Amen.
7 (Look! He is returning with the clouds, 26
and every eye will see him,
even 27 those who pierced him, 28
and all the tribes 29 on the earth will mourn because 30 of him.
This will certainly come to pass! 31 Amen.) 32
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” 33 says the Lord God – the one who is, and who was, and who is still to come – the All-Powerful! 34
9 I, John, your brother and the one who shares 35 with you in the persecution, kingdom, and endurance that 36 are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony about Jesus. 37 10 I was in the Spirit 38 on the Lord’s Day 39 when 40 I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 saying: “Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches – to Ephesus, 41 Smyrna, 42 Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”
12 I 43 turned to see whose voice was speaking to me, 44 and when I did so, 45 I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands was one like a son of man. 46 He was dressed in a robe extending down to his feet and he wore a wide golden belt 47 around his chest. 14 His 48 head and hair were as white as wool, even as white as snow, 49 and his eyes were like a fiery 50 flame. 15 His feet were like polished bronze 51 refined 52 in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar 53 of many waters. 16 He held 54 seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp double-edged sword extended out of his mouth. His 55 face shone like the sun shining at full strength. 17 When 56 I saw him I fell down at his feet as though I were dead, but 57 he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid! I am the first and the last, 18 and the one who lives! I 58 was dead, but look, now I am alive – forever and ever – and I hold the keys of death and of Hades! 59 19 Therefore write what you saw, what is, and what will be after these things. 60 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and the seven golden lampstands is this: 61 The seven stars are the angels 62 of the seven churches and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
