5 O Lord, reflect on 2 what has happened to us;
consider 3 and look at 4 our disgrace.
2 Our inheritance 5 is turned over to strangers;
foreigners now occupy our homes. 6
3 We have become fatherless orphans;
our mothers have become widows.
4 We must pay money 7 for our own water; 8
we must buy our own wood at a steep price. 9
5 We are pursued – they are breathing down our necks; 10
we are weary and have no rest. 11
6 We have submitted 12 to Egypt and Assyria
in order to buy food to eat. 13
7 Our forefathers 14 sinned and are dead, 15
but we 16 suffer 17 their punishment. 18
8 Slaves 19 rule over us;
there is no one to rescue us from their power. 20
9 At the risk 21 of our lives 22 we get our food 23
because robbers lurk 24 in the countryside. 25
10 Our skin is hot as an oven
due to a fever from hunger. 26
11 They raped 27 women in Zion,
virgins in the towns of Judah.
12 Princes were hung by their hands;
elders were mistreated. 28
13 The young men perform menial labor; 29
boys stagger from their labor. 30
14 The elders are gone from the city gate;
the young men have stopped playing their music.
15 Our hearts no longer have any joy; 31
our dancing is turned to mourning.
16 The crown has fallen from our head;
woe to us, for we have sinned!
17 Because of this, our hearts are sick; 32
because of these things, we can hardly see 33 through our tears. 34
18 For wild animals 35 are prowling over Mount Zion,
which lies desolate.
19 But you, O Lord, reign forever;
your throne endures from generation to generation.
20 Why do you keep on forgetting 36 us?
Why do you forsake us so long?
21 Bring us back to yourself, O Lord, so that we may return 37 to you;
renew our life 38 as in days before, 39
22 unless 40 you have utterly rejected us 41
and are angry with us beyond measure. 42
1 In the thirtieth year, 1 on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was among the exiles 2 at the Kebar River, 3 the heavens opened 4 and I saw a divine vision. 5 2 (On the fifth day of the month – it was the fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s exile – 3 the word of the Lord came to the priest Ezekiel 6 the son of Buzi, 7 at the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians. 8 The hand 9 of the Lord came on him there).
4 As I watched, I noticed 10 a windstorm 11 coming from the north – an enormous cloud, with lightning flashing, 12 such that bright light 13 rimmed it and came from 14 it like glowing amber 15 from the middle of a fire. 5 In the fire 16 were what looked like 17 four living beings. 18 In their appearance they had human form, 19 6 but each had four faces and four wings. 7 Their legs were straight, but the soles of their feet were like calves’ feet. They gleamed 20 like polished bronze. 8 They had human hands 21 under their wings on their four sides. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, 9 their wings touched each other; they did not turn as they moved, but went straight ahead. 22
10 Their faces had this appearance: Each of the four had the face of a man, with the face of a lion on the right, the face of an ox on the left and also the face of an eagle. 23 11 Their wings were spread out above them; each had two wings touching the wings of one of the other beings on either side and two wings covering their bodies. 12 Each moved straight ahead 24 – wherever the spirit 25 would go, they would go, without turning as they went. 13 In the middle 26 of the living beings was something like 27 burning coals of fire 28 or like torches. It moved back and forth among the living beings. It was bright, and lightning was flashing out of the fire. 14 The living beings moved backward and forward as quickly as flashes of lightning. 29
15 Then I looked, 30 and I saw one wheel 31 on the ground 32 beside each of the four beings. 16 The appearance of the wheels and their construction 33 was like gleaming jasper, 34 and all four wheels looked alike. Their structure was like a wheel within a wheel. 35 17 When they moved they would go in any of the four directions they faced without turning as they moved. 18 Their rims were high and awesome, 36 and the rims of all four wheels were full of eyes all around.
19 When the living beings moved, the wheels beside them moved; when the living beings rose up from the ground, the wheels rose up too. 20 Wherever the spirit 37 would go, they would go, 38 and the wheels would rise up beside them because the spirit 39 of the living being was in the wheel. 21 When the living beings moved, the wheels moved, and when they stopped moving, the wheels stopped. 40 When they rose up from the ground, the wheels rose up from the ground; the wheels rose up beside them because the spirit of the living being was in the wheel.
22 Over the heads of the living beings was something like a platform, 41 glittering awesomely like ice, 42 stretched out over their heads. 23 Under the platform their wings were stretched out, each toward the other. Each of the beings also had two wings covering 43 its body. 24 When they moved, I heard the sound of their wings – it was like the sound of rushing waters, or the voice of the Almighty, 44 or the tumult 45 of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.
25 Then there was a voice from above the platform over their heads when they stood still. 46 26 Above the platform over their heads was something like a sapphire shaped like a throne. High above on the throne was a form that appeared to be a man. 27 I saw an amber glow 47 like a fire enclosed all around 48 from his waist up. From his waist down I saw something that looked like fire. There was a brilliant light around it, 28 like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds after the rain. 49 This was the appearance of the surrounding brilliant light; it looked like the glory of the Lord. When I saw 50 it, I threw myself face down, and I heard a voice speaking.
2 He said to me, “Son of man, 1 stand on your feet and I will speak with you.” 2 As he spoke to me, 2 a wind 3 came into me and stood me on my feet, and I heard the one speaking to me.
3 He said to me, “Son of man, I am sending you to the house 4 of Israel, to rebellious nations 5 who have rebelled against me; both they and their fathers have revolted 6 against me to this very day. 4 The people 7 to whom I am sending you are obstinate and hard-hearted, 8 and you must say to them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says.’ 9 5 And as for them, 10 whether they listen 11 or not – for they are a rebellious 12 house 13 – they will know that a prophet has been among them. 6 But you, son of man, do not fear them, and do not fear their words – even though briers 14 and thorns 15 surround you and you live among scorpions – do not fear their words and do not be terrified of the looks they give you, 16 for they are a rebellious house! 7 You must speak my words to them whether they listen or not, for they are rebellious. 8 As for you, son of man, listen to what I am saying to you: Do not rebel like that rebellious house! Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you.”
9 Then I looked and realized a hand was stretched out to me, and in it was a written scroll. 10 He unrolled it before me, and it had writing on the front 17 and back; 18 written on it were laments, mourning, and woe.
